The Parish Council and the Recreation Area Committee are making good progress creating the recreation area for Ingleby Cross and Ingleby Arncliffe. In December 2008 Sir John and Lady Bell generously agreed a 25-year lease at a peppercorn rent for the field that is situated behind the school. Access is down the public footpath at the side of the school. It is intended that this will become an outdoor meeting place for the villages as well as a recreation area for the children who live here or come to visit.
In April 2009 potential equipment suppliers presented proposals at an open meeting in the School and people attending had an opportunity to influence what might be installed. The children of the village and those visiting have recently been individually consulted to ensure that the final scheme includes the most popular activities.
The Parish Council obtained a grant from Community Champions via the York and North Yorkshire Community Foundation and this was used for the First Stage to level, seed and fence the area, and to plant one row of hedging alongside the new fence, which was completed in July 2009.
The Second Stage, also using Community Champions funding, has so far resulted in the purchase of a table and seats, and a set of goal posts and net, to which have been added redundant posts and nets from the school. In November 2009 the last of the hawthorn, field maple, hazel and holly wildlife hedging was planted as a communal activity, and in December a Willow Wigwam and a Willow Den were planted. These should grow into green shelters by the summer giving many opportunities for creative play. See the photographs of the work in progress.
Phase 3 will happen in the spring when more of the Parish Council grant money will be used to create small landscape features and seed a wildflower meadow through which a cycle/running track will be mown.
The most exciting part of the scheme is being planned for this summer. Playbuilder, which is a Government grant scheme managed locally by North Yorks County Council has just awarded the scheme £25,000 to spend on facilities for 8 to 13 year olds. It is expected that this money will be spent on an aerial runway (zip wire), a basket swing and possibly an adventure course.
The Committee is looking to obtain further funding for swings for all ages in the medium term and an all-weather sports area in the long term.
The Recreation Area is for everyone in the villages and you are welcome to hold events there at any time. The opportunity was taken in the winter snow to hold an impromptu snow sculpture competition for children in the village, even though it was really the wrong sort of snow! Please send in any suitable photographs of events that you hold there, such as those of Angus and Murdo MacColl who were joint winners of the snow sculpture competition. |
